A new channel to navigate useful tips for translation technology and discussions involving it.

All the myriad Social Media…

… and other Internet instances have, over time, become an ungoverned and unnavigable morass of (dis)information in varied states of relevance and decay. Sites that were once useful channels for the exchange of ideas and necessary professional guidance have too often been rendered useless by shifting commercial and political winds or the advent of some Promising New Platform. And so, once again, I find myself at the head of yet another information trail, wondering where it will lead. I invite you to join me on this wanderweg to see where it might lead and what scorpions may be found under rocks along the way.

Why this, why now?

As you may already know, I have maintained a blog (Translation Tribulations), a YouTube channel and various other presences for about two decades. I have published (and unpublished) thousands of pages of technical advice, business suggestions and rants for language service providers and those who need to work with them. But as time has passed and the noise of the Internet grew to dominate the useful signals, it became increasingly difficult for my professional cohort to find what they need when they need it, or the current status of the information available is often not clear.

My thoughts in beginning a newsletter/blog on Substack are directed toward finding a current medium to best facilitate the dissemination of new, relevant information on language technologies and their use and implications as well as to point out useful information residing on diverse platforms and summarize these in one accessible place. For whom the keys tap….

If your interests lie with language and translations and the technologies that intersect with these, I tap the keys for thee. Or dictate, perhaps, on days when stiff, sore fingers suggest another approach.

The schedule

Those who have followed my posting for the past two decades know that my publication schedule is erratic at best. Nothing for months, and then perhaps half a dozen contributions or more in two days. The working schedule of a translator and consultant can, by the nature of professional conditions, be highly unpredictable, as life itself often is generally. But one of my principal objectives in opening this Substack channel is to point out past contributions which remain largely relevant and new developments that may be useful to know for their application. The body of material relevant to this objective could give me low-hanging fruit to pick each week for many years.

So here is the publishing plan: once a week, late on a Sunday (Lisbon time), to give everyone something to chew on along with their Monday morning toast before starting another long week at the wordface. And however often beyond that the Spirits move me to write.
